Where the edge comes from
On a single-zero wheel there are 37 pockets, but a straight-up winner still pays 35:1 rather than the fair 36:1 profit. On double-zero roulette there are 38 pockets while the same payout remains 35:1. The payout does not expand to compensate for the extra losing pocket.
