Poker rewards players who make decisions after seeing what opponents do. That makes table position one of the most durable concepts in the game.
Later position generally lets you play more hands because you have more information before acting and are more likely to control the size of the pot after the flop.
Why the button is powerful
After the flop, the dealer button acts last in most betting rounds. Seeing checks, bets and raises before deciding can reduce uncertainty. Position does not make a weak hand strong, but it can make the same hand easier to play profitably.
Position changes the meaning of “playable”
A hand that is marginal from early position may be a reasonable open from the cutoff or button. The reason is not superstition—it is the combination of fewer players left to act and a better chance of acting later post-flop.
